Edward Rice

"My long held interest is representational painting. I admire American painting of the 1920's through the 1940's and endeavor to paint in a way that acknowledges my references while making it my own. My work is non nostalgic, I depict architecture from the past not because it is past, but because it is present.

My method is essentially pre-modern : I start each composition with a carefully measured drawing , followed by a monochromatic underpainting. Color is worked up in many layers over a period of months. My goal is to move beyond depiction and establish  an arresting presence. All authentic Art does this."
